Root canal treatment is a complex treatment generally recommended when the pulp (the nerve supply) of the tooth becomes infected. When this happens, the infection can spread through the tooth and develops into an abscess which can be extremely painful.
A root canal treatment halts the spread of dental infection in the jaw and helps maintain the use of teeth which are often cracked or heavily restored. The internal anatomy of every tooth is different and the area we are treating is very small with an intricate structure. This takes a great deal of skill and patience and often involves a couple of visits. These teeth will often require a cap or crown after a root filling to help protect the underlying tooth.
